Recommended Course Progression
Course order:
- Arabic 101 is the first course that counts for the major. If you place in this course, take it first!
- Students need to take 101, 102, 201, and 202 sequentially.
- Once those classes are complete, students can participate in the semester abroad in Jordan offered every fall. The Study Abroad is required for the major.
- Students should take courses for their primary major while completing their lower-division Arabic courses.

Funding & Internships
Funding for Study Abroad Programs
The Jordan study abroad program is required for Arabic students. You can learn more about the program through the Kennedy Center: Find Your Program.
The College of Humanities offers funding for Humanities students going on Humanities study abroad programs. Please apply!
Should I do an internship?
Internships are encouraged! They vary widely, based on students' primary major. If you are curious about which internship options are a good fit for you, reach out to your primary major internship coordinator, the Arabic Language academic and professional development manager, Cielle Davis, or the College of Humanities career director, Christian Sagers.

Funding for mentored research
You can participate in a faculty-mentored research project, and you can receive funding for your project. Learn about the Hums Grants program.

The Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages also has scholarships for its students.

Toggle ItemWhich double majors and minors do Arabic students usually have?
Arabic pairs well with many majors! Depending on your career goals, you might choose: Middle Eastern Studies, Global Supply Chain Management, International Relations, Linguistics, or Sociology. Some minors could be: Digital Humanities, Global Business and Literacy, TESOL, International Strategy and Diplomacy, or Translation and Localization. The Center for Language Studies administers all language certificates.
The Arabic Language Certificate courses are built into the major and
minor. Check out their website for information on classes to take and
registering for your certificate proficiency exams. For Arabic, you will need to take: ARAB 302 or ARAB 426R; IHUM 242; and ARAB 424R or ARAB 425R. -
Toggle ItemWhat score do I have to get on the proficiency exams to graduate with my Arabic major?
You must score an Advanced Mid on your proficiency exams to be cleared for graduation in the Arabic program.

Yes, you have to go on the Jordan Study Abroad to complete the major. You can apply for funding through the Kennedy Center and the College of Humanities to help with the costs
